The social impact of computer science
The social impact of computer science
In 2001, the Foundation for Socially Responsible Computing (CPSR) held a conference on the topic of “Promoting Cyber Principles, 1981-2021.” The speakers reviewed the explosion in computer science and computer-based communications that occurred in the last two decades of the 20th century. Then he turned to the next 20 years and discussed how computer technology creates the possibility of a quick republic and the threat that the control of information by a few people will turn a large number of people to their deaths. The goal of the speakers was to create a “cyber principle”—that is, to find a way to distribute the benefits of technology more equitably.

How much has happened in two decades, his understanding forces a person to think seriously. Computers have left the monopoly of large corporations and become a common companion in everyday work and family life. At the same time, the Internet, which was a tool of computer departments and government researchers in 1981, became a medium that rapidly changed the way people shop, study, and social life.

The use of computers for specific tasks brings with them a number of risks. Sometimes these risks are not limited to a single program, but also include interactions between that program and other systems. If we look at it from a larger perspective, computer use as a human activity affects all other human activities as well. Basically, the maximum infrastructure itself is not a computer or any software, it is not even a complete device of the Internet, but it is a complete society, which has many dimensions in which both positive and negative possibilities are seen.

One of the first signs that computers would have a major impact on society came in 1952, when Walter Cronkite’s Univac computer predicted that Eisenhower would win the election.

Social class versus opportunity
In the past thirty years, computers have created millions of new jobs, from Internet experts, technical experts, and Internet clubs. Millions of old jobs have been redefined: for example, a typist has become a “word processor.” Many other jobs have disappeared or are on the way – for example, travel agents, who are under pressure now that people can buy tickets online and airports no longer need to remember. Pay agents a commission on ticket sales.

There are always new opportunities in the great technological and economic field. The increasing importance of computer skills in the workplace exacerbated the fashion of the 20th century. Today’s high-wage jobs require technical education and skills, and the definition of “job literacy” has evolved. In the second half of the 20th century, the factory wages that provided a comfortable living for people who could only graduate from high school are decreasing day by day due to the number of competitive (and cheap) foreign workers. And as a result of increased automation in domestic factories. Basically, both the high-wage technology sector and the low-wage service sector have grown rapidly, but the bridge between the two has collapsed.
