Both obesity and air pollution are important causes of premature death. In the year 2010, more than 21 million people died in Asia due to air pollution, especially due to smoke from diesel cars and other large vehicles. Statistics show that out of twenty one lakh patients who died as a result of air pollution in Asia, twelve lakh people are residents of East Asia and China and more than seven lakh of them belong to South Asia including India.

According to the World Health Organization, the number of deaths due to air pollution in South Asia alone in 2020 is 2 million and 4 lakh.

Statistics show that in the year 2000, the number of people who died due to air pollution in the whole world reached 32 lakhs. The number of people who died was more than 800,000. According to the JDB report on diseases, air pollution has now been included in the list of ten major causes of death.

Between 2000 and 2000, the statistics of double or triple increase of deaths due to air pollution have disturbed scientists and public health experts. David Peat, director of a health organization in California, says that the newly published statistics of deaths due to air pollution are deeply disturbing. According to the latest statistics, sixty-five percent of all deaths due to air pollution occur in Asia. Air pollution causes health problems such as heart attacks, strokes and cancers that often lead to death.
