Pashtuns and book reading

April 8 is World Book Day. This is despite the fact that it is a common perception among the Pashtuns of Pakistan and Afghanistan that they are not very interested in reading and buying books.

Yesterday, on the occasion of World Book Day, on April 3, most of the lovers of Pashto poetry and literature started reading books in their posts on social media.
But Abasin Yousafzai, a Pashto language teacher and poet at Islamic College University in Peshawar, who has recently published and marketed his third collection of poetry, says his books are popular.
Abasin, of course, says that given the growing influence of computers and the Internet in the lives of people around the world, buying and re-reading books has declined somewhat.
Yousafzai added: “I do not complain that many Pashtuns do not buy books. But if you take a general look, the book culture in the world has diminished considerably because people now want to use the internet more.” The importance of a book printed on paper does not end there. There are more books in Pashto in Pakistan than in Urdu.
Recently, in addition to poetry and novels, Pashto books on various aspects of life have also been published.

Mumtaz Orakzai, a well-known Pashtun poet based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, who has just published a collection of poetry, says that if a standard book is given to Pashtuns, they will definitely read it.

“Pashtuns read books, but a book must be a book. There must be something in the book that adds to our knowledge, broadens our horizons. Dozens of books are now being printed on a daily basis. The standard of these books You should also look into it. If Pashtuns started reading books of this standard, we would not complain that Pashtuns are addicted to reading non-standard books.
Mumtaz Orakzai adds that Pashtun poets and writers should first try, write good poetry or prose and then present it to Pashtuns in the form of a book.

“My friends have published twenty books. But my elders told me to write something in the book that people could read. My friends and elders took my advice. I put my book on the market a few months ago, which is now out of stores. My friend and the company that printed the book asked me to reprint it.
