A mountainous province with traditional architecture

Sarpul is neighboring with Jawzjan, Balkh, Samangan, Bamyan, Ghor and Faryab provinces. This province is located 603 kilometers from Kabul city in the north of Afghanistan. This mountainous province, most of its land is made up of mountains and hills.

Sarpul province was considered a part of Jawzjan province until 1367 (1988), but in this year, based on the divisions that took place, Sarpul province was separated from Jawzjan and became an independent province. This area was called Anbar or Anbir in the past centuries.

In terms of urban planning, Sarpol has traditional architecture and is located in a remote and inaccessible place. Most of the people of this province are Uzbeks, Pashtuns, Tajiks and Hazaras. The main language of Sarpol province is Dari and Pashto, followed by Uzbek.

One of the notable points in this province is that most of the residents of Sarpol province live in villages and there are fewer people than people living in cities. Sarpol province has 111 thousand hectares of farmland, of which 50 thousand hectares are irrigated land and 60 thousand hectares are dry land.

Most of the people of Sarpol province are engaged in agriculture and some are engaged in livestock and other occupations. Among the major products of this province, we can mention wheat, barley, sorghum (corn), chickpeas, beans, flax and sesame. Also, melons, watermelons, grapes, apricots, peaches, and apples are grown in this province along with other plants.

Also, the Center for Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock of Sarpul province announced that the daily production of sesame oil in this province is 1.38 tons and its annual production is 502 tons. A clove of sesame is sold between 450 and 600 Afghani in the local market, and according to the report of the Statistics and Information Department, in the first six months of 2019, sesame oil worth 31,629 dollars was exported abroad.

Sarpol province has many historical and old monuments, but many of these monuments have been destroyed or damaged during the history and due to the wars and conflicts that happened. One of these historical possessions is the tomb of Imam Yahya Benzeid, one of the architectural masterpieces of the Seljuk period, which has beautiful inscriptions and floral carvings in Kufi script and extremely delicate plasterwork.

The holy shrine of Imamzadeh Yahya bin Zaid (a.s.) in Sarpul province has always been the focus of attention of the Muslim people of Afghanistan and has contributed to the prosperity of this province.

Mineral Resources

As one of Afghanistan’s oil-rich provinces, Sarpul has a capacity of 2.8 million cubic meters of oil wells. According to the reports of domestic and foreign institutions, this province has copper and coal mines in addition to oil and gas.

Angut oil resources, which is part of the Amu Darya oil field – with about 87 million barrels of oil (estimated in the 1960s and 1970s) – in northern Afghanistan, is considered one of the oil resources of Sarpol Province. This oil source is located five kilometers east of Sarpol city.

In 2013, Afghanistan’s Ministry of Mines handed over oil extraction work from this oil field to China National Oil and Gas Company (CNCP) for a period of 25 years under a contract worth 400 million dollars. According to the estimate of the Ministry of Mines of Afghanistan, the revenue from Sarpol Ingot oil extraction will be more than seven billion dollars in the next 23 years.

Other oil mines in Sarpol are Qashqari oil field with 10 extraction exploration points, Aghdaria mine with 8 extraction exploration points and Bazar Komi oil mine which has 8 extraction exploration points.

Also, according to the report of the Ministry of Mines, there is a copper mine with an exploration area of ​​210 square kilometers and 247 square kilometers in Balkhab region. Accordingly, Balkhab copper mine is one of the priorities of the Ministry of Mines of Afghanistan.

From Saripol district to Gosfendi district

Sarepol: This district is the center of Sarepol province. Sarpol district constitutes about sixteen percent of this province and has 217 small and big villages.

This district is the most populated district of Sarpul province with a population of about 177 thousand people in 2019.

Balkhab: This district with a population of 56,864 is located about 150 kilometers southeast of the center of Sarpul. This district is one of the beautiful and green areas of Sarpol province, which has a pristine and pleasant nature from spring to mid-autumn.

The center of this district is called Tarkhoj, which is located at the intersection of three valleys: Tarkhoj, Balkhab Bala and Balkhab Bain. Among the scenic areas in this district, we can mention the Mazar valley and the villages of Pirghole and Zouk, which have valleys full of trees and forests and wonderful vegetation with many rivers, lakes and springs.

Sancharak: Sancharak or Sangcharak district is made up of 142 villages with a population of more than 115,000 people. The natural geography of Sancharak consists of continuous and low hills that are suitable for rainfed cultivation.

Sancharak district generally has a moderate climate. However, sometimes in the hottest days of summer, its temperature reaches 40 to 42 degrees, and in winter it can reach about ten degrees below zero.
